UD&C collected and organized the selected set of images and text as a slide presentation for distribution to design faculty and students, design professionals, as well as public and private sectors. The examples illustrate the set of Universal Design Principles developed under a grant from the National Institute for Disability Rehabilitation and Research by the Center for Universal Design in Raleigh, NC. The project, led by UD&C President and architect, John P. S. Salmen, AIA, assembled an interdisciplinary team of nationally-recognized leaders in Universal Design to assist in the evaluation of submitted examples. Team members Ron Mace, FAIA, Director, Center for Universal Design and NC State University in Raleigh NC; Bill Lebovich, author of Design for Dignity; James Mueller, Director, Universal Design Initiative, Chantilly VA; Elaine Ostroff, Executive Director, Adaptive Environments Center, Boston, MA; Edward Steinfeld, professor of architecture at the State University of New York, Buffalo and president of the Association for Safe and Accessible Products; and design jurors Paul Arthur, President, Paul Arthur VisuCom, Ltd., Toronto, ONT; Meredith Davis, professor of graphic design, NC State University, Raleigh, NC; and Cynthia Leibrock, ASID, author of Beautiful Barrier Free and President of Easy Access Inc., Fort Collins, CO reviewed images with the assistance of user/experts for design excellence and usability by diverse users.
