Milwaukee Art Museum Joins Blue Star Museums

Now through Labor Day, Blue Star Museums – now numbering 916 – offer free admission to active-duty military families.
The Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is the latest to join the honor roll. The museum hosts 20,000 works from antiquity to the present day. MAM's collection is matched by the 2001 addition of the elegant Quadracci Pavilion, the first building in the United States designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The hand-built structure reflects the culture of the lake, with signature features such as a 90-foot high vaulted ceiling, and the Burke Brise Soleil, a moveable sunscreen with a 217-foot wingspan that unfolds twice daily.

Families visiting the Milwaukee Art Museum can enjoy hands-on art activities through weekend family programs, the family audio guide, the education gallery, or by using the ArtPack, self-guided games to help artgoers of all ages connect with the museum's collection.
On exhibit through September 26, Warrington Colescott: Cabaret, Comedy & Satire, a major retrospective of this Wisconsin-based artist. Colescott (b. 1921) is known as a social satirist whose complex printmaking techniques often interpret contemporary and historical events in the tradition of William Hogarth and George Grosz. The Milwaukee Art Museum has the largest collection of work by Colescott, and has co-published a catalogue of his work with the University of Wisconsin Press. In honor of Colescott's exhibit, next week the museum will host Moulin MAM, an evening of theater, dance, and a DIY studio where budding artists can create works from recycled materials.

Other Milwaukee Museums participating in Blue Star Museums are the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University, and the Jewish Museum Milwaukee.
