Washington, D.C. - The National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), will meet in a public session on Thursday, March 24 in Room M-09 of The Nancy Hanks Center, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.

Attending this session for the National Council on the Arts will be three new Council members: Phoenix Art Museum Director James Ballinger, Seattle Symphony Music Director Gerard Schwarz, and Wall Street Journal art critic Terry Teachout.

The public session will also include presentations on two ongoing NEA National Leadership Initiatives: NEA Arts Journalism Institutes and the NEA Jazz Initiative. Last June, the NEA announced the establishment of three NEA Arts Journalism Institutes to foster improved arts criticism in classical music and opera, theater, and dance. The institutes target journalists who cover the arts in smaller media markets where professional development opportunities are limited. Institutes for dance critics are hosted by the American Dance Festival at Duke University; for classical music and opera critics at Columbia University; and theater critics at the University of Southern California. Andras Szanto, Director of the National Arts Journalism program at Columbia University, will discuss the NEA Arts Journalism Institute on classical music and opera hosted by Columbia University.

A presentation on the NEA Jazz Initiative will feature comments by former Council member and NEA Jazz Master David Baker, as well as a performance by the Jazz Orchestra of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. The NEA Jazz Initiative, supported by Verizon, includes nationwide touring performances and associated educational activities, television and radio programming and a commemorative publication.
