National Endowment for the Arts Announces $1.5 Million in New Technology Grants

Washington, D.C. - The National Endowment for the Arts announced today it will award $1.5 million to non-profit arts organizations to help them develop distinctive ways of using new technology to advance the arts and better serve the public. Thirteen innovative projects will receive Resources for Change: Technology grants in amounts ranging from $50,000 to $165,000.

"Many arts organizations lack the resources to realize their full technological potential and often struggle to provide their patrons with the up-to-date information and online programming they demand," said National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia. "It is our hope these organizations will provide leadership to their respective fields and that these model projects will be duplicated by other arts organizations."

Projects include a wide variety of technology initiatives. For instance, Arizona State University's Institute for Studies in the Arts will develop hardware and software to document, analyze, and formulate modern dance choreography. The George Eastman House will create a user-friendly database specifically designed for photography collections, allowing searches by time periods, social themes, artistic characteristics, and other non-traditional content parameters. The University of California at Los Angeles' HyperMedia Studio will create software that will allow the information and experience of a museum exhibition to be tailored to the specific needs of visitors. Other projects will support technological distribution mechanisms, distance learning, efforts to create a shared community using technology and a new generation of lighting systems for touring arts performances.
