To support the residency of pianist and conductor Ignat Solzhenitsyn which will reach communities in Raleigh, Southern Pines, Winston-Salem, and Henderson, SC. Activities will include a master class for piano students at the North Carolina School for the Arts in Winston-Salem, a solo piano recital, a performance of a piano concerto with the orchestra, chamber ensemble concerts, and orchestral concerts in multiple communities.

To support the opening season concert at the Redlands Memorial Chapel, featuring the newly restored Cassavant Organ. Kimo Smith, the featured soloist, will perform Samuel Barber's Toccata Festiva for Organ and Orchestra and will conclude with Camille Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 ("Organ"). The concert will include the performance of a commissioned work by Lori Alexander, titled Fanfare for Orchestra.

To support two concerts during the 2003-04 season. The final concert will feature guest artist Kristin Lee in a performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto op. 35 in D Major.

To support the Paradise & More concert. Repertoire will include Frank Zappa's Dupree's Paradise, Brahms' Violin Concerto with guest artist Axel Strauss, and Symphony in D Minor by Cesar Franck. Following the concert, conductor Michael Morgan and violinist Axel Strauss will discuss the works with the public.

Repertoire will include a world premiere by composer Sheila Silver, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with pianist Peter Takacs, and Mozart's Symphony No. 41 ("Jupiter"). The orchestra will increase its marketing efforts for the concert by using radio and television advertising in an effort to raise public visibility of the event.

To support a collaborative presentation of The Nutcracker ballet. This high visibility, annual event will showcase the orchestra and a Russian dance company, and will feature the talents of local children.

To support the European Passport concert program. The Virginia Symphony, with guest conductor Klauspeter Seibel and violin soloist Phillippe Quint, will perform opening concerts for the 2003-04 season.

To support the string quartet residency program, including performances with the full orchestra and provide ensemble activities and performances in area schools, retirement homes, day care centers, and libraries. The Degas Quartet will serve audiences in the Catawba Valley, primarily Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, and Catawba counties.
