National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia to Give Luncheon Speech at National Press ClubJune 13, 2003
Washington, DC -- Dana Gioia, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, will address the National Press Club on Monday, June 30, 2003, as part of the Club's Newsmaker Luncheon series. This will be Mr. Gioia's first address to the Washington press corps. As budget crises are raiding the bottom lines of state, regional, and non-profit arts organizations across the country, Chairman Gioia will confront the question, "Can the NEA Matter?" Dana Gioia was nominated by President George W. Bush as the ninth Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and confirmed unanimously by the U.S. Senate on January 29, 2003. He is an internationally-acclaimed poet, literary critic, educator and former business executive. He is best known for his 1991 book Can Poetry Matter? about the role of poetry in contemporary culture. His collection of poems Interrogations at Noon won the 2002 American Book Award. His poems, translations, essays and reviews have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Washington Post Book World, The New York Times Book Review, Slate, and The Hudson Review, and he has long been a BBC Radio commentator on American culture.
