Keystone College (La Plume, PA)

Scranton, Pennsylvania
$25,000

The NEA grant will support Iron Works, a series of community iron casting activities. Overseen by Keystone College in partnership with Lackawanna County government, guest sculptors will lead workshops for economically and academically at-risk high school students on the historical art of cast iron sculpture. Students will then assist in leading the public creation of sculptures during the community iron pour at Arts on Fire, a growing industrial arts festival held annually at the Historic Scranton Iron Furnaces. The resulting sculptures will be displayed along Scranton's Lackawanna River Heritage Trail, a high traffic urban trail that has an estimated 128,000 users annually. Additional project partners include the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority, Anthracite Heritage Museum & Iron Furnaces, Employment Opportunity & Training Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and multiple local art galleries and individual artists. Scranton has a population of 75,995.
