In 1961, the Utah Shakespeare Festival was founded in Cedar City, Utah—a city of 29,200 residents—to attract tourists visiting the area's national parks during the summer. The theater has grown ever since, offering community outreach activities, educational tours of schools, and theater workshops in addition to their four-play seasons. In 2000, the theater was awarded the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. The success of the theater company has led to the building of a new $25 million Shakespeare Center, which will include an Elizabethan-style theater, an existing indoor theater, and an outdoor amphitheater. Construction is scheduled to being in fall 2013.

The Cedar City Corporation (an office of the city government) is partnering with Utah Shakespeare Festival to design the five acres of public space that will surround the new theater complex. Landscape architects will design the public spaces, including a new outdoor amphitheater, to connect the Utah Shakespeare Festival with the historic downtown, Southern Utah University, and Southern Utah Museum of Art. The landscape design will complement the theater construction to create an inviting and accessible space to serve the 120,000 patrons each year that attend an Utah Shakespeare Festival performance.
