City of Grand Prairie
Grand Prairie, Texas $50,000
|
The City of Grand Prairie, population 175,960, has provided a Weed & Seed Job Training Program for ex-offenders for the past six years, with 35 percent of those who complete the program finding full-time employment. Art will be added to the training they can receive through the Public Art and Job Training Project. With their Our Town grant, the City and the Grand Prairie Arts Council will have professional artists train 20 ex-offenders as public art apprentices. Ex-offenders will gain experience in designing, installing, and maintaining public art by working closely with artists commissioned to produce highly visible public art throughout the city. Art education workshops, gallery exhibitions, and community lectures will enhance the two public art commissions. The project will demonstrate the ways in which ex-offenders can contribute to the community's artistic identity of place.
