North American Cultural Laboratory (Highland Lake, NY)

Highland, New York
$50,000

The rural town of Highland, New York, is located in Sullivan County along the Upper Delaware River, designated a National Wild and Scenic River by the National Park Service. Although the town has an area of almost 52 square miles, the population is roughly 2,500.

The theater company North American Cultural Laboratory and the Town of Highland are partnering on the Weather Project, a multidisciplinary community arts project. Professional theater artists, visual artists, scientists, community groups, town officials, and residents will explore the subjects of the weather and energy through collaborative performance and art making. Project activities include a theater production; the commission and exhibition of functional, artist-designed weather balloons; interactive workshops and community demonstrations about energy sustainability; and a documentary about the initiative by local filmmaker Tina Spangler. Additional partners include the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, Western Sullivan Public Library, Delaware Highlands Conservancy, and the Sullivan Association for Sustainable Development.
