Pittsburgh Opera's performance at Fort Drum was a moving experience for military families, following right on the heels of a major deployment at the base. Seventy young children were entertained by an afternoon performance of "The Dog Who Sang at the Opera." In the evening, from the opening work of Bellini's "Suoni la tromba" (a duet scored for tenor and baritone that conveys the dual message of victory and honor), it was obvious that the audience was in store for a terrific performance. The subsequent works scored mostly of arias and duets incorporated many of the required works and resulted in a carefully designed program. From the opening work to final curtain, the performers "worked" the room and achieved a high level of audience engagement. Performed without intermission, the program was well paced, accessible (enhanced by the use of supertitles), and successful.
The response to this performance was so positive that a return engagement has been scheduled for March 2007, when more troops will be home.
