How can one sum up the incredible impact Los Angeles Opera had on this rural community in the California desert? Activities consisted of a two-day residency at Twentynine Palms High School as well as an evening performance at the Sunset Cinema at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms. Feedback from the school and the base has been extraordinary.

Los Angeles Opera provided music workshops and vocal training for 60 choral, theater, and music students at Twentynine Palms HS. As part of their training, the high school students rehearsed two songs that they performed before an audience of local elementary school students the next morning, in conjunction with another performance by Los Angeles Opera. An email from the high school the afternoon of the second day reported that "They have just left - the kids wouldn't let them get out of here. It has been glorious."

So the kids were impressed, but what about the base? The emails we received following the performance speak volumes: "The presentation of selected numbers was preceded by a humorous explanation as to the content and it made it enjoyable and easy to follow. Even for a country boy," and "The audience, most of whom had never seen or heard opera previously, delivered a standing ovation at the end and the performers complied with a beautiful and moving rendition of "America the Beautiful" - so appropriate for a Marine base." Los Angeles Opera performed approximately one hour of opera and Broadway favorites, including songs from Carmen, La bohème, Don Giovanni, and West Side Story.
