Founded in 1919, Hartford's Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts is one of the area's leading arts organizations, housing a number of cultural organizations, including the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and the Connecticut Forum. Bushnell is based in downtown Hartford, which boasts a dense concentration of public spaces and arts and culture organizations -- all within a 15-minute walk of each other -- including the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, the Hartford Stage Company, and the Connecticut Science Center. As part of the city's 10-year revitalization master plan, in 2008 the Bushnell Center partnered with the Greater Hartford Arts Council for phase one of iQuilt, a pedestrian network designed to weave together 45 of the city's downtown cultural assets and public spaces.

Its MICD25 grant will help support phase two of the iQuilt project, which will focus primarily on design. Expected activities include landscape design of the GreenWalk intended to connect Bushnell Park and the revitalized Connecticut River waterfront and urban design and enhancement of the existing pedestrian network, including creation of interactive public art and cultural displays and storefront cultural programming. Additional project activities will include a districtwide inventory and analysis of cultural resources and ongoing community engagement.
