The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs was established in 1984 to enhance the cultural life of the city, often partnering with other city agencies -- such as the Department of Zoning and Urban Land Planning and the Department of Community Development -- on cultural planning projects.
The three agencies are partnering to initiate the Cermak Creative Industries District, where four historic industrial buildings will be converted into an arts district, providing affordable and sustainable spaces for creative businesses and work spaces for the arts. The buildings are on the bend of the Chicago River, about 1.5 miles form the Loop, and once housed some of the major industries that made the city a powerhouse in the early 20th century. The buildings will now be used to support the city's creative industries. The city will use its MICD25 grant to develop a district management plan for the area, identifying core arts and community partners, and to develop guidelines for physical planning, urban design, and adaptive reuse.
