The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County in North Carolina, incorporated in 1949, was the first locally established arts council in the country. Once of its goals is to make the city of Winston-Salem a "City of the Arts."

Its MICD25 project involves incorporating art and artistic design in the highway infrastructure projects being built through downtown Winston-Salem. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is replacing 11 bridges within the I-40 business corridor, so the arts council created a coalition including NCDOT, the City of Winston-Salem, and the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that artists and urban designers are full participants in the projects.  The goal is to create a new visual environment affecting how the nearly million residents -- and visitors -- perceive their surroundings. The coalition will assemble the artists and urban designers to create a master plan for the infrastructure projects, providing guidelines for design, lighting, sound walls, and bridge abutments, as well as water features, public art, and festival space adjacent to the rights-of-way.
