FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support InLight Richmond 2013, a juried exhibition of light-based art. The exhibition will include video projections, interactive environments, multi-media projects, light installations, a community lantern parade, and a curatorial program in which a group of artists will be commissioned by a curator to produce projects that respond directly to the site. Facades, walls, storefronts, doorways, parking lots, alleyways, and the natural environment in the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood will serve as installation sites. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Challenge America To support a master class, dress rehearsal, and public performance with the Ahn Trio and members of the American Youth Philharmonic conducted by Daniel Spalding. All activities are scheduled to take place at the George Mason University Center for the Arts and will be targeted to engage economically disadvantaged middle school students. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Challenge America To support a concert featuring Ricardo Morales, principal clarinetist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and a series of outreach activities that will engage Latino and Hispanic residents in Virginia. Morales will provide bilingual workshops for students attending Spanish immersion schools, an open rehearsal for students, a visit to the Levine School of Music, lectures for adults in Fairfax, and transportation to the concert will be provided by Fairfax Symphony Orchestra to students attending Fairfax County Public Schools. Folkstreams, Inc., will continue to provide access to films concerned with traditional arts and culture, while adding new films to the website, developing contextual background materials for these films, and implementing an open source data management system to make the site easier to maintain and administer. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater and Musical Theater To support a production of Shakespeare's R & J, adapted and directed by Artistic Associate Joe Calarco. Set in a present-day all-male Catholic boarding school where Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet has been banned, the piece tells the story of a group of students who unearth the play and secretly perform the text. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater and Musical Theater To support the creation and production of a 90-minute, movement-based, wordless adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest with an original score. With the script on hand, the piece will be developed primarily through improvisation by a company of actors trained in the theater's specific vocabulary of movement and choreography, while the score is developed simultaneously throughout the rehearsal process. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support Cultivating Community Through Dance, which will include the presentation of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Keigwin + Company, and the Richmond Ballet. The project will include in-depth residency activities such as master classes, workshops, and dialogue for K- 12 students, pre-professional dancers, and the general public. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support a new production of Andre Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire to launch the Made in America series. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tennessee Williams, the production is comprised of a creative team that includes conductor Maestro Ari Pelto, director Sam Helfrich, set designer Andromache Chalfant, who will be joined by singers Kelly Cae Hogan, David Adam Moore, Julia Ebner, and Scott Ramsey. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Arts Education To support Crooked Road's Traditional Music Education Program of professional development for teachers and after-school classes for children programs in rural southwest Virginia counties. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Challenge America To support the exhibition Megan Marlatt: Substitutions for a Game Never Played, a series of art workshops, and a culminating public parade that will celebrate Spanish art. The project will be a collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club and the Richmond Public Library, and will feature Barcelona-based visual artists Neus Hosta and David Ventura, who specialize in making capgrossos (big heads), artistic creations that originate in Spain.
