FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater and Musical Theater To support the development and premiere of Dance for a Dollar. The original dance/theater play, co-created by writer Mariana Carreno King and director/choreographer Daniel Jaquez, explores the contemporary urban immigrant experience through story, movement, and dance from traditional to folkloric styles, and centers on the culture of social dance as a shared experience that transcends immigrant alienation. The play tells the story of a 1791 slave ship murder and was commissioned by the theater as part of American Revolutions: The United States History Cycle, a series of commissions inspired by times of transformation, innovation, challenge, or conflict in American history. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Challenge America To support the Portland Jazz Festival featuring Jack DeJohnette and Friends - a band comprised of NEA Jazz Master Jack DeJohnette, Ravi Coltrane, and Matt Garrison. The project will include the presentation of The Incredible Journey of Jazz, a musical theater performance about the history of jazz designed for middle school students; performances by local high school jazz ensembles; a workshop at Portland State University led by DeJohnette; and a live Jazz Conversation series featuring DeJohnette that will be recorded, podcasted, and archived on the jazz festival's website.
