FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support concerts, educational activities, and tour performances by Orchestra Iowa in celebration of the re-opening of the Paramount Theatre, which was destroyed by a flood in 2008. The program will include premiere performances of American Gothic, a previously commissioned new work by composer Michael Daugherty inspired by the painting of the same name by Grant Wood, who was from Iowa. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support the Opera Iowa Touring Educational Troupe, a program that will engage artists to reach students in underserved rural Midwestern schools. In partnership with Iowa City's school district, activities will include fully-staged, touring productions of Little Red Riding Hood, a one-act opera for grades K-6; Bizet's Carmen for grades 7-12; and teacher training to air on Iowa's public television network in real-time available to every school in Iowa. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park Commission Outreach Project. In celebration of the newly opened sculpture park containing 27 sculptures by mid-20th-century artists, composer Steve Heitzeg will create a new work for orchestra which will be premiered during the symphony's 75th-anniversary season and will feature outreach programs including free public lectures, college and community performances in outlying areas, and school performances for fourth and fifth grade students. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support educational programming related to the Des Moines Art Center's exhibition Leslie Hewitt: Untitled (Structures). A contemporary American artist, Hewitt's (b. 1977) work is conceptually-based and explores how photographs create meaning and history. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support conservation of the William Lightner's (1885-1968) Our Mother of Sorrows Grotto with related documentation and educational programs. The contemplative outdoor environment was built between 1929-41 using cement, semi precious stone, and Italian glass mosaics. It consists of two mosaic arches, an elaborate bridge over a lagoon, a 10-column structure representing the Ten Commandments, and a central shrine. Red Cedar Chamber Music Marion, IA $15,000
