FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support traditional music programming at the Blue Ridge Music Center. The project will present concerts, lectures, and workshops celebrating music and dance traditions of the Appalachian Mountains, and will feature local and regional talent, including NEA Heritage fellows Wayne Henderson and Doc Watson. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support the fourth Castleton Festival, which takes place annually on a farm in rural Virginia and includes opera performances with orchestral accompaniment. The festival's mission to engage young artists will be met by the residency program that will allow 40 advanced voice students to live, study, and perform onsite during the festival. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Challenge America To support the Patchwork of Virginia Music Festival. A one-day event including lecture-demonstrations and performances, the festival will feature traditional roots music of Virginia and also explore the history and style of Mariachi music from the western part of Mexico as a means of engaging an increasing Latino population in the area. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Challenge America To support the production of Volver, a new dance theater work created by choreographer Catherine Marie Davalos that relflects Chicano culture. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support The Music of Budapest, Prague, and Vienna, a month-long tribute to that region's impact on the history of Western music, directed by music director Christoph Eschenbach. Programming will include orchestral and chamber works by Bela Bartok, Antonin Dvorak, Franz Liszt, Zoltan Kodaly, and the Strauss family, and will feature guest artists Anne Schwanewilms, Nathalie Stutzman, Steve Davislim, Rogert Holl, and the Washington Chorus. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the rehearsal of a new musical, Brother Russia, by the award-winning team of Dana P. Rowe and John Dempsey, and directed by artistic director Eric Schaeffer. A Russian theater troupe performs its ramshackle adaptations of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky for local farmers, and one night, its star, the seemingly immortal Brother Russia, enlists his fellow actors to help dramatize his own life story, the mystical saga of Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Artist Communities To support four- to six-week residencies for artists creating artworks for social media platforms. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support a production of Orfee by composer Philip Glass and early 20th-century librettist, Jean Cocteau. The creative team will include director Sam Helfrich and conductor Steven Jarvi who will be joined by baritone Matthew Worth, soprano Sara Jakubiak, soprano Heather Buck, tenor Jeffrey Lentz, and bass Christopher Temporelli.
