FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support the production of a series of arts events featuring Memphis arts organizations and artists for the benefit of identified underserved communities. In addition to selected individual artists, among the several arts organizations participating in the series are Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Opera Memphis, and Playhouse on the Square. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production and national broadcast of the public radio series Beale Street Caravan. Weekly, one-hour programs featuring performances by blues artists will be broadcast on more than 280 public, community, and college radio stations nationwide. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support a project called Urban Memphis and the Rural Delta: Its Voices, Its Beats which will organize and digitize various media, including audiotapes, videotapes, films, slides, and photographs. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts To support a songwriting program in schools for students in third to twelfth grade in Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga. Museum staff and professional songwriters train language arts and music teachers to use the Country Music Foundation Words & Music Teachers Guide to teach students the process of writing song lyrics. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support a production of Dreamgirls, with music by Henry Krieger and book and lyrics by Tom Eyer. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support The Cumberland Trail Music and History Project, which will present traditional music found in the 11-county Cumberland Trail corridor of Tennessee's Cumberland Mountain region. The project will use two platforms to present traditional music: performances and a recording label that will make music from the regional traditional musicians available. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the 24th annual free outdoor Shakespeare in the Park production of Romeo and Juliet, directed by David Wilkerson. The production will provide numerous opportunities to developing artists, including student internships and 50 hours of intensive theater training, and will cast a diverse group of 12-14 high school and college students from across the Middle Tennessee region in supporting roles. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support a recording project featuring works by composer Roberto Sierra. Conducted by Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, the orchestra's live performances of Sierra's Sinfonia No. 4, Carnaval, Fandangos, and Alegria will be recorded in the Schermerhorn Symphony Center and the compact disc will be released on the Naxos label. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the presentation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, adapted and performed by Théâtre Tout a Tràc. The Canadian troupe, which has placed the classic story in a library full of books that transform into set pieces, will perform six performances for mid-Tennessee area students and teachers, as well as two public weekend performances as part of the Arts Center's Family Field Trip Series.
