To support performances and related activities by Captain Mackey's Goatskin and Stringband. The concerts will be presented in lecture/demonstration format, combining music with storytelling, and will expose local students in inner-city and rural communities to the arts and culture of Ireland.

To support performances and community outreach activities by the Alabama Ballet Company. Under the artistic leadership of Tracey Alvey, the company will perform for the general public, as well as provide one performance for the benefit of Marshall County school children.

To support the Freedom Creek Blues Festival. Proposed artists include musicians Jody Williams, Eddie Kirkland, and Cedric Burnside. The event is organized in partnership with the Alabama Blues Project.

To support a performance and outreach activities by the McCoy Tyner Trio featuring tap dancer Savion Glover. Open rehearsals, discussions with the artists, and classes will be available for economically disadvantaged inner-city youth.

To support the creation of a public art map and information guide. The Association, a local arts agency providing services and technical support to artists and arts organizations, will lead the project to document and promote Fairbank's public art.

ARIZONA

Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona
Tucson, AZ
To support the Youth Mosaic Art Project. Under the leadership of artist Carlos Valenzuela, teens will design and manufacture murals to be displayed throughout the reservation. The mural designs will be developed through discussions with elders about tribe culture.

ARKANSAS

Fort Smith Symphony Association, Inc.
Fort Smith, AR
To support EARQUAKE!, a series of concerts targeting elementary school students. The concerts will incorporate a full orchestra, sessions with composer Kevin Puts, and performances by Western Arkansas Ballet students. Educational study guides and music excerpts will be sent to participating schools prior to the concerts.

To support Giving Voice: A Festival of Writing and the Arts. Featured artists will include poet Andrew Hudgins, fiction writer Leif Enger, and nonfiction writer Sari Fordham.

Ozark Foothills Filmfest, Inc.

To support Filmfest activities including regional premieres of independent feature films, followed by post-screening discussions with the filmmakers. The festival will also include panel discussions and thematic short film showcases.

CALIFORNIA

3rd I South Asian Independent Film
San Francisco, CA
To support the South Asian International Film Festival. The eighth annual festival will screen full-length feature films, documentaries and short films by media artists and independent filmmakers from the United States, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Canada, and Europe.

API Cultural Center

To support the Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival, celebrating Asian American contributions to jazz. A series of live performances for Bay Area audiences will include proposed artists Francis Wong, Anthony Brown, and VidyA, a South Asian jazz ensemble.

Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose, Inc.
San Jose, CA
To support performances by the Abhinaya Dance Company featuring the San Jose Taiko Group and Gamelan Sekar Jaya, a Balinese ensemble. The concert, celebrating Abhinaya's 30th anniversary, is scheduled to be held at the Mexican Heritage Plaza and is representative of the Company's numerous cross-cultural programs.

Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center

To support the development and production of marketing materials promoting Asian American and Pacific Islander American cultural organizations. Organizations such as Asian Improv aRts, Kearney Street Workshop, and the Chinese Cultural Center will benefit from the collaborative marketing project that will focus on the Bay Area Asian and Pacific Islander community.

To support the Via Arte Street Painting Festival The Bakersfield Museum will select artists and arts organizations to create work for the festival focused on the Italian tradition of street painting that dates back to the 16th century.

To support the Mural-in-a-Day program. A muralist will work with volunteer artists from the Townsite Neighborhood to create murals for installation in two local parks.

Craft & Folk Art Museum Incorporating the Egg and the Eye

To support Some Assembly Required: Race, Gender and Globalization, a group exhibition. Among the 13 proposed artists are Mildred Howard, Dr. Amalia Mesa-Bains, Willie Little, Adia Millett, and Alison Saar, whose works will tell a story about the impact of globalization on identity.

Developmental Disabilities Service Organization, Inc. (on behalf of Short Center Repertory)
Sacramento, CA
To support the writing and production of Tent City, an original script exploring homelessness in Sacramento. In partnership with local organizations serving the homeless, Short Center Repertory will work with members of the homeless community to create the work.

Engage Inc.
Burbank, CA
To support the Experience Talks - Radio Elder Arts Project, through which live interviews with artists will be recorded for radio broadcast. The series will feature interviews with visual artists John Outerbridge and Phoebe Beasley and actors Carol Channing and Len Lesser.

To support Retelling The Ring in Art, Music, Movies, and Literature. An art exhibit, lecture series, concert performance, and workshops for teens will explore adaptations of Richard Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung.

To support the Magnolia Terrace Landscape Collaboration. Artists with developmental disabilities will design words and phrases that will be incorporated into pathways, fences, and lights surrounding the facility. Magnolia Terrace provides affordable apartments for adults with developmental disabilities.

To support a series of master classes taught by Philippine dancer Franco Pastor. The classes will culminate in a public performance at the Joyce Ellington Library Community Center.

La Raza Bookstore (aka La Raza - Galeria Posada)
Sacramento, CA
To support a performance by bolero musicians Trio Los Panchos. Related activities will include a master class targeted toward high school students taught by Trio artistic director Gabriel Vargas Aguilar and a series of mid-century Mexican films featuring a bolero score.

Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, Inc.
Oakland, CA
To support the annual Traditional Music Concert. A lecture placing the gospel songs in historical and cultural context will follow the performance. Potential guest artists include Jacqueline B. Hairston, Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir, and the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra.

To support performances of Mirrors of Mumbai. The multidisciplinary piece will be presented at colleges and high schools in Alameda and Santa Clara counties, areas with high Asian Indian populations.

Riverside Community College District Foundation

To support performances of Apollo: To the Moon, a multimedia theater production created by Kevin Reese and Mary Hall Surface. The presentations, targeted to grades 4 through 12, will be held at the March Field Air Museum and will include guided tours of the facility.

San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, Inc.
San Francisco, CA
To support Meet Gabriela Frank, a special outreach initiative targeting the Latino community. Frank will present four free concerts of her new composition titled El Picaflor: Tone Poem for Violin and Orchestra. Other activities will include programming targeting elementary schools with predominantly Latino students and a free chamber music concert at a Latino community center.

To support performances by Daniel Beaty of his one man show Emergence-SEE!. Beaty will also participate in post-show discussions and a master class.

Sierra Repertory Theatre, Inc.

To support a production of Is He Dead?, a play by Mark Twain and adapted by David Ives. The organization will work with teachers to incorporate the play into their curriculums, create and distribute study guides, and present a student matinee.

To support the Kids' Acting Network. Under the direction of teaching artist Marah Winslow, rural youth will follow a technical track or performance track culminating in performances for the community. Other participating artists will include videographer John Cumming, scenic artist Mary Carpelan, costume designer Bee Soule, and musician Gerry Smida.

To support the Authors in Community program. Colorado Book Award-winning authors will conduct readings in rural communities in eastern and southern Colorado.

To support the Indigenous Film and Arts Festival. In conjunction with the festival, after-school film screenings will be held at American Indian youth centers.

To support performances of Raw-Dios: Behind the Pigpen in the Morning, a play by Oakland, California, theater company headRush. Related activities will include theater workshops for students affiliated with the College Assistance Migrant Program and a Chicano Theater Summit targeted toward individuals ages 15 to 22.

Action for Bridgeport Community Development, Inc.

To support the Percussive Arts Society Chapter Day, a series of concerts and master percussion classes. The project will allow local student musicians to interact with national and international artists. Artists under consideration include drummer Joe Morello and Peruvian jazz artist Alex Acuña.

To support In This House, a multidisciplinary project exploring the history of the Hempstead House, built in 1678. Artists will include set designer Michael Bezrudczyk, graphic designer John Alves, lighting designer Blu, composer Leslie Bird, and a cappella gospel singers Women of the Cross.

To support the Stage of Discovery, a series of performances targeted to elementary, middle, and high school students. Presenting companies will include Mad Science Productions, Kennedy Center on Tour, ArtsPower, First State Ballet Theater, and Hudson Vagabond Puppets. Additional activities will include in-class instruction about theater etiquette, pre- and post-performance discussions, and the distribution of study materials.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Building Bridges Across the River (aka THEARC)

To support a marketing and outreach initiative promoting arts events at THEARC Theater by Building Bridges' partners and other arts entities. Programming by partner organizations that operate programs out of THEARC - the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Levine School of Music, and the Washington Ballet - as well as programming by organizations such as the Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts, Arena Stage, and City Dance will be promoted to residents of Washington's wards seven and eight.

To support the creation of a music-themed mural project. The mural will trace the history of music, from African drumming to the District?s jazz scene to iPods.

To support a production of Franois-André Danican Philidor's Sancho Pana. Students of Stuart Hobson Middle School will create their own opera based on the story of Sancho Panza, a character from Don Quixote. The students will present their piece in sequence with the professional production at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.

To support Harvest of Voices, an artist residency with the Core Ensemble featuring actor/playwright Akin Babatunde. The musical theater work will incorporate oral histories of residents of central Palm Beach County.

To support a collaboration between professional artists and the music ensemble at Sidney Lanier School, a public school for students with disabilities. Musicians Lansara Camara and David Akombo, the Santa Fe College Jazz Band, and music education majors from Syracuse University will perform alongside Lanier students at Carnegie Hall in New York.

To support school performances and workshops with the Ensō Quartet. The string quartet will provide recitals and workshops throughout the Leon County and Gadsden County school districts.

To support the creation of an outdoor mural at the Harbor Club in the Sulphur Springs neighborhood. The mural will examine the contributions of African Americans to the surrounding neighborhood.

To support a pre-concert talk and public performance with pianist Read Gainsford. Students at Pensacola High School will be invited to participate in an in-school performance and lecture by Gainsford as well as attend the dress rehearsal for the public performance.

Miami Art Museum of Dade County Association, Inc.
Miami, FL
To support Brick By Brick, an after-school program for at-risk teens. Held at multiple community centers, youth will receive instruction on such topics as landscape design, architecture, signage, and surface design.

To support a performance by Daniel Beaty of his one man show Emergence-SEE!. Beaty's performance will be part of the Aurora Jacksonville Black Arts Festival.

To support a residency by Step Afrika. Step Afrika will perform and conduct workshops for Collier County students that feature work based in a dance tradition that grew out of the song and dance rituals practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities.

To support the Morton Theatre Centennial Celebration. Project activities will include a one-day festival featuring national and regional artists and a vaudeville performance at the theater to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Morton Theatre, the major entertainment facility for Athens's African American community for many years.

To support Music Tells a Story, concerts exploring the region's American Indian heritage. Lee Johnson will compose orchestral music and Gayle Ross will write narration exploring the Cherokee Indian's experience during the Trail of Tears.

To support performances by the Borealis String Quartet and Amelia Piano Trio. Related activities will include master classes for university students, coaching for an area youth orchestra, and a concert in rural Deary, Idaho.

To support the creation of a mosaic mural at the Joliet Housing Authority's Liberty Meadows Development. Under the leadership of professional artists, resident youth and young adults will participate in the design and fabrication of the mural.

To support Key Ingredients: Stories of Food and Tradition. Adults from low-income neighborhoods will work with poet Parnesha Jones to capture and present personal narratives about the geographic and cultural origins of foods. Selected pieces will be published in the Journal of Ordinary Thought.

To support a new staging of the ballet Romeo and Juliet. Public high schools where Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is required reading will be offered discounted tickets. Past principal dancers have included Jennifer Kronenberg and Carlos Guerra.

Rockford Symphony Orchestras, Inc.
Rockford, IL
To support performances of Modest Mussorgsky's piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition, featuring photographers' artistic responses to the music. Rockford Art Museum staff will provide curatorial direction for the images displayed at both school and public performances.

To support performances of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, a co-production of The Acting Company and The Guthrie Theatre. Related activities will include an acting workshop for university students and a performance targeted toward high school students.

To support performances by Trio Globo, a contemporary acoustic jazz ensemble. Trio cellist Eugene Friesen, pianist and master harmonica player Howard Levy, and percussionist Glen Velez will perform for audiences in north central Kansas.

To support the development of a website and cell phone tour promoting regional cultural organizations and traditions. Participating organizations will include the Kentucky Repertory Theater, Caveland Artists Guild, the Heritage Arts Center, and the American Cave Museum.

To support the Annual Juneteenth Jamboree of New Plays, a theatrical exploration of historical and contemporary issues facing African Americans. Contributors will include director Sue Lawless, playwright Samm Art Williams, and St. Louis Black Repertory Company leaders Ron Himes and Linda Kennedy.

To support the 2010 Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival celebrating the power of music and community to overcome adversity. Artists will include NEA National Heritage Fellow guitarist D.L. To support the production and promotion of a spoken word performance and the creation of a mural as part of 11th annual Open Community Hip-Hop Festival. These activities will feature musical artist Tem Blessed and graffiti artist and muralist Ryan Mehigan.

To support Bridges Across Cultures, an exhibition of works by Giles Laroche and associated outreach activities. A published author and illustrator of children's books, Laroche creates intricate cut paper illustrations that celebrate architecture from around the world.

To support Seascape, an arts festival exploring the cultural impact of the fishing industry on the Gloucester community. Workshops will include Setting Stories to Music, taught by storyteller Jay O'Callahan, and Origins of Fishing Songs by educator David Coffin. A concert will feature shanty singers the Johnson Girls, balladeers Dan and Bonnie Milner, flutist Strong Eagle Daly, and percussionist Ken Sweeney.

To support the Wellfleet Cultural Tourism Initiative, which will include a website, events calendar, and a new logo design. To support a performance by the Inclusive Community Choir, comprised of youth with and without physical, cognitive, or developmental disabilities. The choir will rehearse for several months before presenting a collaborative concert with musician Dan Zanes.

To support an exhibit and catalogue in conjunction with a residency by artist Erica Lord. The artist will present a video-making workshop for American Indian college students and a free public lecture.

To support the Lansing JazzFest. Participating artists will present new compositions, as well as interpretations of classic jazz works. Activities targeted to families with children will include an instrument petting zoo.

To support the Patterns Visiting Artists Forum, featuring poet Robert Dana and writer Beth Ann Fennelly. Related activities with the authors will include writing workshops, readings, and lectures.

To support the Waterfront Film Festival. Festival activities will include question and answer sessions with national filmmakers, an outdoor film screening, and educational seminars.

To support Kshoy/Decay!, a new work exploring violence against women. Scheduled to premiere at the Southern Theater, the original Southeast Asian dance theater composition will feature the work of composer and vocalist Shubha Mudgal and guest director Laurie Carlos.

To support a concert and outreach activities by the Parker Quartet. Comprised of violist Jessica Bodner, cellist Kee-Hyun Kim, and violinists Daniel Chong and Karen Kim, the quartet will perform, as well as conduct lecture demonstrations and master classes for local musicians.

To support performances of Peter Boyer's Ellis Island - Dreams of America. Through a collaborative effort with Theatre B, local immigrants will tell their oral histories, receive dramatic coaching, and present their stories during the concerts.

To support a collaborative performance of Sva by Ragamala Dance Theatre and Wadaiko Ensemble Tokara. Related activities will include a community dancing workshop and master classes for college percussion students.

To support performances by the African Children's Choir. As part of the Council's Young People's Artist Series, the choir will perform and participate in pre- or post-performance discussions with audience members drawn from Columbus, Lowndes County, and the surrounding area.

To support student performances by the Venere Lute Quartet and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. At the concerts for inner-city public school students, youth will be given vouchers to attend public performances with their families.

To support the project Telling Our Stories, featuring a performance and master class by Philadanco. Adult community members will be coached in storytelling through the written word, dance, and oral presentation, resulting in a public performance at the Missouri History Museum.
