OREGON Artists Repertory Theatre Portland, OR $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the world premiere of an original musical commemorating the destruction of Celilo Falls, a natural resource in Oregon. The Ghosts of Celilo was created by Oregonian artists Marv and Rindy Ross, Thomas Morning Owl of the Umatilla tribe, Chenoa Egawa of the Lummi tribe, and Tom Hampson. Borenya West African Drum and Dance Rogue River, OR $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support a series of lecture-demonstrations, performances, residencies, and workshops. Activities will be led by Amazones, a group of female master drummers from Guinea, West Africa. Caldera (aka Camp Caldera) Portland, OR $65,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Perspectives in Photography. The year-long program in 10 Oregon middle and high schools will provide training in digital photography. Eugene Ballet Eugene, OR $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support regional dance touring in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. The company will present Children of the Raven, choreographed by artistic director Toni Pimble, in rural communities. Homowo African Arts & Cultures Portland, OR $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support Under the Mango Tree, a tour of Ghananian music and dance. Led by 1996 NEA National Heritage Fellow Obo Addy, the tour will travel to rural communities in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Insight Out Theatre Collective Portland, OR $5,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support The Tempest/FOR:GIVE Project, featuring a multidisciplinary production of Shakespeare's The Tempest. The text will be interpreted through aerial choreography, heightened movement, dance, song, film, and sound. Literary Arts, Inc. Portland, OR $7,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the Oregon Book Awards and Author Tour. Finalists will conduct readings at libraries, bookstores, and community organizations throughout the state. Media-Rites Portland, OR $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production of a series of radio stories to be created by Dmae Roberts. In the Mix will be a series of radio features about issues of mixed racial identity and the arts. Mountain Writers Series Portland, OR $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support readings, residencies, workshops, and special events throughout the Pacific Northwest. Proposed authors include Kim Barnes, Frank X. Gaspar, Jim Harrison, Marie Howe, Edward Hirsch, Lawson Fusao Inada, Ted Kooser, Dana Levin, Alberto Álvaro Ríos, Robert Wrigley, and Al Young. National Charrette Institute Portland, OR $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support the development of educational videos for collaborative public design workshops, or charrettes. The videos will describe the charrette process and provide instruction on organizing charrettes. Oregon Arts Commission Salem, OR $633,300 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. Portland Center Stage Portland, OR $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the production of a play. Apollo, Part 2: Dark Side of the Moon by playwright/director Nancy Keystone will feature original music by composer/sound designer Randall Tico. Western Alliance of Arts Administrators Foundations (aka Western Arts Alliance) Portland, OR $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the reinvention of WAAAF's annual conference. Major shifts in format will include a site change and the development of a central meeting point at the site, increased opportunities for networking, and the introduction of a festival of full-length performances. Wisdom of the Elders, Incorporated (Consortium) Portland, OR $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support Stories of the Original Inhabitants. A collaboration with Northwest Heritage Resources, the project will consist of storytelling apprenticeships, culminating in a symposium at the Northwest Indian Storytellers Association (NISA) Festival. Wisdom of the Elders, Incorporated Portland, OR $20,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support curriculum development for workshops in Northwest Native American arts. Nancy Nusz (Director of the Oregon Folklife Program of the Oregon Historical Society), Dr. Don Addison (Choctaw ethnomusicologist), and six tribal artists will develop workshops in storytelling, carving, music, and dance targeted to underserved youth in Oregon and Washington tribal communities.
