MICHIGAN Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Inc. Ann Arbor, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the Generations program. Designed to bring music to individuals at all stages of life, the project includes performances and educational activities for pre-school age children, families, young professionals, and senior citizens. Arab Community Center for Economic & Social Services Access (aka ACCESS) Dearborn, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support a photography training program at Munger Middle School in Detroit. The objective of the project is to initiate a cross-cultural dialogue and joint learning experience among a diverse group of youth through photography and technical skill-building. Artrain, Inc. (aka Artrain USA) Ann Arbor, MI $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the tour of the exhibition Human Form, with accompanying catalogue and education programs and materials. Artrain will bring the exhibition to underserved communities nationwide from 2008 through 2010. Detroit Adventure (aka Southeast Michigan Arts Forum) Detroit, MI $18,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support an artist residency program at the Academy of the Americas. Singer and songwriter Julie Beutel, urban poet David Blair, and artists from the Matrix Theatre and Detroit Film Center will participate in classroom residencies for sixth- and seventh-grade students. Detroit Educational Television Foundation Detroit, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support completion costs for a documentary film on Finnish-American architect and designer Eero Saarinen (1910-61). The Dangerous Mind of Eero Saarinen, a feature-length film for national broadcast, will chronicle the life and work of an influential master of 20th-century architecture. Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall (Consortium) Detroit, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Civic Wind Ensemble and Civic Jazz Ensemble. In partnership with Michigan State University's Department of Music, the program will provide pre-professional training to student musicians through participation in wind and jazz ensembles. Eisenhower Dance Ensemble Southfield, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support a project to expose elementary students in the Pontiac, Michigan, School District to creative movement. The program is being designed in collaboration with the Pontiac Schools' Health Department and William Beaumont Hospital. InsideOut Literary Arts Project, Inc. Detroit, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support writing residencies and puppetry workshops. The program will provide as many as 25 weekly creative writing workshops, lead by an InsideOut writer-in-residence, to approximately 180 students in six classrooms in two Detroit public elementary schools. Jackson Symphony Orchestra Association Jackson, MI $20,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support JSO Goes to School. Students will work with composer-in-residence Dr. Jonathan Bruce Brown and musicologist Anna Celenza to explore and create music in an eight-week music composition program. Long Haul Productions Inc Three Oaks, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production of a series of documentary radio stories created by Dan Collison and Elizabeth Meister. Take Note will be a series of short radio pieces which will incorporate newly written songs by singer/songwriters based on documentary stories about communities that are often overlooked by national media. Long Haul Productions Inc. Three Oaks, MI $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production of audio documentaries by Dan Collison and Elizabeth Meister. As part of the series Heartland Chronicles, the programs will be broadcast on National Public Radio and Chicago Public Radio to an estimated audience of 2.2 million people. Marygrove College Detroit, MI $5,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support readings and workshops with a critically renowned African American writer as part of the college's Contemporary American Authors Lecture Series. The day-long program will be promoted through direct mailings to more than 200,000 students and community members. Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Lansing, MI $693,845 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit Detroit, MI $75,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Ensemble Training Program. Professional actors and teaching artists will provide students with intensive acting, vocal, and technical theater training, leading to the creation and performance of an original musical. Poetry Slam, Inc. (aka PSI) Whitmore Lake, MI $7,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the 17th annual National Poetry Slam in Austin, Texas. The four-day festival will showcase more than 350 poets from across the nation and abroad to an estimated audience of 16,000. University Cultural Center Association (aka UCCA) Detroit, MI $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the Detroit Festival of the Arts. Held in downtown Detroit, the annual international arts celebration will present free music, dance, and theater performances and will include public art and literary events.
