MASSACHUSETTS Angkor Dance Troupe, Inc. Lowell, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the integration of Cambodian culture and history curriculum in middle and high schools. The project will culminate in a full classical dance performance at each of the Lowell public schools. Artists for Humanity, Inc. South Boston, MA $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Youth-Run Arts Micro-Enterprise program. Through paid apprenticeships, underserved youth (ages 14 to 18) will receive studio instruction in painting, photography, sculpture, murals/set design, silk-screen, and graphic design. Atlantic Public Media (aka APM) Woods Hole, MA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support Transom.org. The project encourages both emerging and experienced independent audio producers to tell their stories on public radio. Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Inc. (aka BMOP) Roslindale, MA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support CD recordings of works by American composers. The four discs will include premiere releases or new releases of out-of-print recordings of works by composers Reza Vali, George Antheil, Ken Ueno, and Jacob Druckman. Boston Symphony Orchestra, Inc. (aka BSO) Boston, MA $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support Youth and Family Concerts with accompanying online educational tools. Two programs, each performed eight times, will focus on the concept of Theme and Variations. Community Access to the Arts, Inc. Great Barrington, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support expansion of activities related to art making techniques for people with physical disabilities. The technique "Artistic Realization Technology," developed by artist Tim Lefens, uses lasers attached to artists' heads and trained trackers - people acting as the hands of the artists. Federated Dorchester Neighborhood Houses, Inc. Dorchester, MA $30,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Art a la Carte. Professional artists will lead field trips to museums and galleries and provide weekly classes in intermediate and advanced painting, sculpture, photography, computer-assisted art, and African dance for college-bound teenagers who wish to major in the arts. Filmmakers Collaborative, Inc. Waltham, MA $45,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production of a documentary film about the writer Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888). Using dramatic re-creations, interviews with scholars, feature film clips, archival illustrations, and actors reading from Alcott's diaries, letters, and fiction, the film will provide a complex portrait of the writer best known for her novel Little Women. Filmmakers Collaborative, Inc. Waltham, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support research, development, and scripting costs for a documentary film on the playwright Lorraine Hansberry (1930-65). Intended for national broadcast on public television, the feature-length film will explore the life and work of the playwright best known for writing the groundbreaking play A Raisin in the Sun. Filmmakers Collaborative, Inc. Waltham, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support development and partial production costs for a documentary film about the musician Johnny Cash (1932-2003). Intended for national broadcast on PBS, the 90-minute film will weave together a wide selection of Cash's songs, film clips of his performances, home movies, and interviews with family, friends, and fellow musicians as it traces the story of his life and career. From the Top, Inc. Boston, MA $60,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production of the public radio series From the Top. The weekly, hour-long radio program features performances by young classical musicians ages eight to 18, interviews, and appearances by guest artists. From the Top, Inc. Boston, MA $18,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Make Your Own Radio Show (MYORS) program. Using From the Top's radio show as a model, students chosen from approximately 15 schools in 10 cities will learn all aspects of radio production with guidance from professional musicians and sound engineers. Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras Boston, MA $35,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Incentive Community Program (ICP). Targeted to inner-city and minority youth, the program offers weekly music lessons, ensemble classes, and instrument rental. Massachusetts College of Art Boston, MA $30,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support a pre-college summer art program for students in the 11th and 12th grades. Students will enroll in four visual arts classes that they will attend daily during a four-week period. Massachusetts Cultural Council Boston, MA $720,400 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. New England Foundation for the Arts Boston, MA $1,500,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the Dance component of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius. Each tour will include performances, community residencies, and related educational activities such as in-school residencies, master classes, demonstrations, and performances. New England Foundation for the Arts Boston, MA $881,500 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. New Repertory Theatre, Inc. (aka New Rep) Watertown, MA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support New Rep On Tour. The program will bring adaptations of The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett and Shakespeare's Hamlet to students in schools throughout Massachusetts. North Shore Community Arts Foundation, Inc. (aka North Shore Music Theatre) Beverly, MA $60,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support a production of Show Boat, based on the novel by Edna Ferber, with book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein and music by Jerome Kern. Accompanying educational activities will explore the show's place as the first modern American musical. Northeast Document Conservation Center (Consortium) Andover, MA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support a one-year internship in paper conservation. In collaboration with the New England Museum Association, the project also will provide intern training in collections care to smaller museums in the region. Project STEP, Inc. Boston, MA $65,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the String Training and Educational Program (STEP). Targeted to gifted African American and Latino children, ages 6 to 18, activities are designed to prepare the students for professional careers in classical music as concert soloists, teachers, and/or orchestral players. Raw Art Works, Inc. Lynn, MA $40,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Real to Reel, a media arts education project. Underserved teens will learn all aspects of narrative and documentary filmmaking. Shakespeare & Company, Inc. Lenox, MA $50,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Shakespeare in Action, a theater arts residency program. The series of classroom and after-school sessions will focus on a language-based exploration of a Shakespearean play through master classes, rehearsals, text analysis, and student performances. Smith College (on behalf of Museum of Art) Northampton, MA $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the exhibition African Beaded Art: Power and Adornment, with accompanying catalogue and education programs. The project is the first to address African beaded art as a cross-cultural study, rather than focusing on the artistic production of one or two regions. WGBH Educational Foundation Boston, MA $60,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the development and production of a public television series about Latin music. Planned as four hour-long programs, the series will explore Latin music's evolution in the United States and its impact on American culture. WGBH Educational Foundation Boston, MA $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production and distribution of short video segments of poetry to public television stations across the country. The Poem initiative is designed to make poetry available to the public on a regular basis during hourly station breaks between PBS programs. Williams College (Consortium) Williamstown, MA $18,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support continuation of Kidspace, a visual arts education project. Designed in conjunction with the Clark Art Institute, the program offers students the opportunity to study and make visual art under the direction of professional artists and provides teachers the opportunity to attend numerous training workshops. Williamstown Theatre Festival Williamstown, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support youth-oriented community outreach programs designed to include the local Williamstown community with the festival's annual operations. The project will include the Free Theatre Series, the Kid's Night Program, and the Greylock Theatre Project.
