LOUISIANA Big Buddy Program Baton Rouge, LA $10,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the WordPlayTeen Writing Project. Designed to foster development of literary skills, the project will include creative writing workshops, open microphone readings, poetry slams, publications, leadership development, and resources for educators. Division of the Arts, Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation, & Tourism Baton Rouge, LA $633,900 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. Friends of NORD, Inc. (aka NORD/NOBA Center For Dance) New Orleans, LA $35,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Center for Dance Footbridge Summer Intensive. Local professional dancers will offer nine weeks of sequential, pre-professional ballet, tap, and modern dance training to youth, ages nine to 18. Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra New Orleans, LA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support Una Festa d'Italia, a concert celebrating Italian and Sicilian heritage. The concert will focus on the long-standing musical connections between New Orleans and its citizens of Italian and Sicilian origin. National Performance Network, Inc. (Consortium) New Orleans, LA $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the 2007 National Performance Network annual meeting in New Orleans. Presented in partnership with the Ashe Cultural Arts Center, the national forum for artists and presenters will feature performance showcases, professional development workshops, and plenary sessions. New Orleans Center for Creative Arts Institute (aka The NOCCA Institute) New Orleans, LA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the Artists-in-Residence program. Activities will include master classes, Center Stage performances, On the Edge gallery exhibitions, and readings. New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Inc. (aka NOJO) New Orleans, LA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support a series of free community concerts. The big band will perform for diverse communities of New Orleans. Performing Arts Society of Acadiana, Inc. (aka PASA) Lafayette, LA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the creation and presentation of a new work set to zydeco music by Elise Monte Dance Company. In addition to performances, the company will offer a variety of education and outreach activities. Tulane University (aka Adminstrators of the Tulane Educational Fund) New Orleans, LA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the 12th annual New Orleans Heritage Dance Festival. The festival will include dance classes, lectures, and performances celebrating the Afro-based dance traditions in North and South American and Caribbean cultures. Tulane University (aka Adminstrators of the Tulane Educational Fund) (on behalf of Shakespeare Festival at Tulane) New Orleans, LA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a production of Shakespeare's Coriolanus. Artistic director Ron Gural will direct the production. University of New Orleans (on behalf of American Routes) New Orleans, LA $60,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production and national distribution of American Routes, a weekly radio series devoted to a broad range of American music. Folklorist Nick Spitzer hosts the two-hour, weekend-oriented program, in which he combines recordings of popular, folk, jazz, and classical forms with in-studio performances, field recordings, and interviews. Xavier University of Louisiana New Orleans, LA $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support a summer arts program for youth to study, design, and create Mardi Gras Indian costumes. Working with two revered Mardi Gras Indians, Big Chief Darryl Montana and Big Chief Larry Bannock, students will study diverse types of Native American dress and the inspirations for these costumes.
