ILLINOIS Art Institute of Chicago (on behalf of School of the Art Institute) Chicago, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support the Teacher Institute in Contemporary Art. Experienced high school art teachers from around the country are invited to Chicago to enrich their artistic creativity through studio access, sessions with contemporary artists, and lectures in the visual arts. Art Resources in Teaching Chicago, IL $27,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support visual artist residencies in Chicago public schools. Elementary- and middle-school students and their teachers will work with professional artists to develop art-making skills through lessons in art history, peer critique, and related hands-on art projects. Arts & Business Council of Chicago (aka A&BC Chicago) Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the enhancement of smARTstart, an online resource for start-up, Illinois-based arts organizations. Additions will include online chats with arts management experts; basic templates for business, marketing, and strategic planning; bulletin boards; chat rooms with other newly established organizations; and user profile forms to collect demographic information about site users. Beverly Arts Center Chicago, IL $18,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Artreach. Professional theater and visual artists will lead students enrolled in elementary schools on Chicago's South Side in field trips, lessons, and hands-on projects. Black Ensemble Theater Corporation Chicago, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the Black Playwrights Initiative. The project will provide training to emerging playwrights in the development of new musical theater works to be showcased at the annual Chicago Black Playwrights Festival. Chicago Architecture Foundation (aka CAF) (Consortium) Chicago, IL $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support a network, conference, and forum on design education. In partnership with the American Architectural Foundation, design educators and organizations will share information about education programs, resources, models, and practices. Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education Chicago, IL $75,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Teaching Arts Excellence Through Learning Partnerships. Partnering arts organizations and schools will bring professional artists together with public school students and their teachers to study art works, develop skills to critique art works, and produce and critique their own work in the context of the public school curriculum. Chicago Children's Choir Chicago, IL $25,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support choral festival activities featuring singers from the Choir's DiMension program. Targeted toward young male students with changing voices, the choir participants will attend weekly rehearsals with their director as well as all-day workshops with a distinguished guest conductor, resulting in festival performances with a professional men's vocal ensemble and also on the group's own. Chicago Classical Recording Foundation Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support a CD recording of works by emerging American composers. The disc will include works based on the poetry of Billy Collins by composers Lita Grier, Carter Pann, Pierre Jalbert, Stacy Garrop, and Vivan Fung. Chicago Shakespeare Theater Chicago, IL $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the Team Shakespeare program. The initiative offers performances and educational services to students and teachers in more than 500 Chicago-area schools. Chicago Theatre Group, Inc. (aka Goodman Theatre) Chicago, IL $45,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the production of a play at the Goodman Theatre. Mirror of the Invisible World by Mary Zimmerman will be directed by artistic director Robert Falls. Columbia College Chicago (on behalf of Museum of Contemporary Photography) Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Picture Me program at the Museum of Contemporary Photography. The after-school mentorship program will take place at three public schools for underserved teens, ages 12 to 18, created in collaboration with Gallery 37/After School Matters. Dance COLEctive Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support a tour of an evening-length performance, Written on the Body, choreographed by artistic director Margi Cole. The tour will include a number of related outreach and education activities including master classes, lecture-demonstrations, classroom talks, open rehearsals, and discussions with targeted community organizations. Evanston Art Center Evanston, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support the installation of a temporary art and sound installation by artists Shawn Decker and Jan-Erik Andersson. The artists will create the work, Birds Nest, using high-grade wood beams and piano wire on the lake-front lawn of the 1920's mansion which now houses the art center. Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus Glen Ellyn, IL $32,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Ensemble Program and the Honors Chorus Workshop. Year-round choral ensembles at various skill levels will serve as a basis for sequential music education of chorus members. Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Inc. (Consortium) Chicago, IL $55,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support whole-school dance programs in elementary schools. With Oak Park School District 97, Hubbard Street dance company will create dance education programs at six elementary schools. Kartemquin Educational Films (aka Kartemquin Films) (Consortium) Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support post-production costs for a documentary film by Joanna Rudnick. In collaboration with the Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders, the filmmaker, part of the Kartemquin team, will examine the struggles women face when they have undergone genetic testing for cancer and discovered they are positive for the gene. Kartemquin Educational Films (aka Kartemquin Films) Chicago, IL $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support post-production costs for a documentary film by David Simpson. Milking the Rhino examines community-based conservation in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and South Africa. Marwen Foundation, Inc. Chicago, IL $25,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Studio Program, a visual arts education project. Students from underserved public schools will receive after-school visual arts classes and portfolio-building development opportunities. Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum (Consortium) Chicago, IL $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the presentation and tour of new plays through the Latino East/West Theater Exchange. In partnership with Teatro Visin, the project will include Karen Zacarias's world premiere adaptation of B. Traven's novel Macario and Pregones Theater's production of The Red Rose. Midwest Young Artists Highwood, IL $35,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support MYA Summer Music Festival. Students will participate in one of MYA's summer programs such as a four-week chamber music workshop, two-week musical theater and opera workshop, one-week Chicago Jazz Workshop, or the four-week, multi-arts Fine Arts Day Camp. Pegasus Players Chicago, IL $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support an expansion of the Young Playwrights Festival (YPF). The semester-long playwriting program at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. College Prep High School will provide opportunities for youth to study works by American playwrights and create plays of their own. Peoria Symphony Orchestra (aka PSO) Peoria, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support community outreach concerts. The orchestra will perform family and youth concerts as well as a free outdoor concert at the Peoria Park District's amphitheater. Poetry Center of Chicago (aka The Poetry Center) Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support readings featuring nationally renowned writers and Hands on Stanzas, a poets-in-the-schools program. Students of the program receive an anthology of their own work, free admission to readings, and opportunities to present their poetry at sites throughout the city. Quad City Arts, Inc. Rock Island, IL $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support the Visiting Artist Series (VAS). The artist residency program brings performing artists of national and international reputation to the Midwest. Ravinia Festival Association Highland Park, IL $12,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support community outreach and educational programs. The festival will continue its partnership with the Lawndale community to bring music performances and education to Westside Chicago. Richard Nickel Committee Chicago, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support the digitization and increased accessibility to the photographs, negatives, papers, and research of architectural photographer Richard Nickel (1928-72). In addition, a publication, The Complete Architecture of Adler & Sullivan, will be facilitated by the project. Snow City Arts Foundation Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support creative writing, music, and visual arts workshops for hospitalized children. Working alongside professional artists, the children who participate will receive classroom credit for their accomplishments, in accordance with an agreement reached with the Chicago Public Schools. Street-Level Youth Media (aka Street-Level) Chicago, IL $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Summer Arts Apprenticeship Program. Targeted to underserved high school youth, the program will advance students' artistic and leadership skills through an intensive, three-month media arts studies program and apprenticeship with an adult. Street-Level Youth Media (Consortium) Chicago, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Street-Level at My Museum. During various in-school, after-school, and summer workshops, elementary school students will create media art works for display at the Chicago Children's Museum. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Champaign, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support a Web-based publication, Book of Codes, that will document codes and laws that create good urban form. The project will provide access to historic codes and assist designers and planners and the communities they serve. Utopian Theatre Asylum Chicago, IL $12,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the production of a play. It's Only the End of the World by Jean Luc LaGarce will be directed by artistic director Zeljko Djukich. Victory Gardens Theater Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the production of a new play. I Sailed with Magellan, by ensemble member Claudia Allen, will be directed by Sandy Skinner. Video Machete Chicago, IL $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Global Youth multimedia workshops. Targeted to immigrant youth, the project will include in-school, after-school, and summer training in digital video production, graphic design, and Web design. WBEZ Alliance, Inc. (aka Chicago Public Radio) Chicago, IL $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the Third Coast International Audio Festival. Established in 2001 as a "Sundance for Radio," the festival provides an opportunity for documentarians, feature reporters, and audio artists from around the globe to gather and share their expertise, and for listeners to hear the best work currently being produced. Window to the World Communications, Inc. (aka 98.7 WFMT Radio) Chicago, IL $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production and national distribution of the radio series Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin.
