DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Americans for the Arts, Inc. Washington, DC $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support the design and implementation of CaFE (Call For Entry), an online system for the digital documentation of public art projects across the United States. Americans for the Arts' Public Art Network (PAN) will collaborate with the Western States Arts Federation using CaFE to produce its Public Art Year In Review. Association of Performing Arts Presenters, Inc. (aka Arts Presenters) Washington, DC $70,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support professional development services for the presenting field. Intensive seminars, "think-tank" meetings, regional forums, peer networking sessions, and online and print publications will focus on such issues as leadership transition, organizational development and sustainability, audience development, curatorial training, and marketing and resource development. Black Women Playwrights' Group Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the Annual Conference of new plays. The conference will be held in Chicago and will showcase the latest original works by emerging and established women playwrights of color. Capital Concerts, Inc. Washington, DC $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support staging and related costs for The National Memorial Day Concert and A Capitol Fourth, two patriotic concerts at the United States Capitol to be nationally broadcast live on PBS in 2007. A national television audience of 10 to 12 million watches these 90-minute programs each year. CityDance Ensemble, Inc. Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the reconstruction of three seminal works of American modern dance. The works include How Long Brethren? (1937) by Helen Tamiris; Harmonica Breakdown (1938) by Jane Dudley; and Dust Bowl Ballads (1941) by Sophie Maslow, and will be presented in a program titled Brother Can You Spare a Dime? at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda, MD. Contemporary Music Forum (aka CMF) (Consortium) Washington, DC $17,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support new music concerts and a new music academy for American and French music students. A partnership with the French-American Cultural Foundation, the project will include a 10-day new music festival with extensive educational activities, a premiere performance of a work by composer Roger Reynolds, and a concert in celebration of the 100th birthday of composer Elliott Carter. Cultural Development Corporation of the District of Columbia (aka CuDC) Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the Business Center at Flashpoint. The center's network of management tools and capacity-building services for artists and arts organizations will provide residency and technical assistance programs as well as opportunities for affordable exhibition, performance, and office spaces in conjunction with other business amenities. Dance Heritage Coalition, Inc. Washington, DC $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the establishment of Dance Heritage Preservation hubs to transfer analog videotapes to digital formats for preservation purposes. The hubs will be located at the San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum, Ohio State University, and Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative, Inc. (aka DC Collaborative) Washington, DC $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support Art for Every Student. Students will receive tickets, study materials, and transportation for cultural events throughout the District of Columbia. Film Odyssey, Inc. Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the development of a documentary film on the artist James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). The hour-long film, to be produced by Karen Thomas, is intended for national broadcast on PBS. Future of Music Coalition (aka FMC) Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the annual Policy Summit. The three-day conference will engage speakers and panelists to discuss and examine key issues impacting independent professional musicians including digital technology, artists' rights, and the current state of the music industry. GALA Inc., Grupo de Artistas Latinoamericanos (aka GALA Hispanic Theatre) Washington, DC $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a production of Bodas de Sangre (Blood Wedding) by Federico Garcia Lorca. GALA Hispanic Theatre's artistic director Hugo Medrano will direct. Helanius J. Wilkins - EDGEWORKS (aka EDGEWORKS Dance Theater) Washington, DC $8,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the Negro Dance Theatre Project. The project will involve creating and presenting works inspired and performed by the Negro Dance Theatre, the first dance company of African American men, formed in 1954. Heritage Signature Chorale Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the performance and recording of composer R. Nathaniel Dett's oratorio, The Ordering of Moses. Written as the composer's masters thesis at Eastman School of Music in 1932, the work is scored for chorus and orchestra and is currently not available as a commercial recording. International Arts & Artists, Inc. Washington, DC $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the touring exhibition Art of Africa: Objects from the Collection of Warren Robbins, with accompanying education programs and materials. The exhibition is on loan from the Robbins Center for Cross Cultural Communication in Washington, DC. Levine School of Music Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Early Childhood Music. The 30-week program is designed to incorporate musical activities that also will support the development of young children's cognitive abilities and their social skills. Master Chorale of Washington, Inc. Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Partners in Peace All-City Honors Chorus Education Initiative. The 10-week program of choral music instruction and humanities lessons for middle- and high-school students will culminate in a free concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (aka NASAA) Washington, DC $491,600 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support national leadership services in the areas of education and technical assistance, public awareness, development of new partnerships, and advanced information services. Established programs for member state arts agencies will be continued, maintained, and updated in FY 2008. National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (aka NATHPO) Washington, DC $66,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the Tribal Museum Leadership Institute. The week-long conference will provide training for as many as 30 tribal museum directors and staff and address issues including interpretation, collections management, institutional development, and fundraising. National Building Museum Washington, DC $36,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support the exhibition Marcel Breuer: Design and Architecture. The retrospective will explore Breuer's (1902-1981) significance to both 20th-century furniture design and contemporary architecture. National Public Radio, Inc. (aka NPR) Washington, DC $75,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production, acquisition, and distribution of music programming for public radio. Through its Digital Music Initiative, NPR will create an extensive online Web site as a music resource for public radio stations and the public, and will offer new and archival musical performances to stations for broadcast. National Public Radio, Inc. (aka NPR) Washington, DC $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production and national broadcast of the public radio series World of Opera. Hosted by Lisa Simeone, the series reaches nearly 500,000 weekly listeners on 140 stations. Patricia M. Sitar Center for the Arts Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Instrumental Music Education Project. Professional musicians will provide after-school, free one-on-one instrumental music lessons targeted to inner-city students. PEN/Faulkner Foundation Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a fiction reading series and a writers-in-the-schools program. The foundation will distribute to classrooms free copies of books preceding each author's visit. Phillips Collection Washington, DC $180,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts Touring To support the touring exhibition American Impressionism: Paintings from the Phillips Collection and accompanying education programs and materials. The exhibition highlights 50 paintings from the golden age of American Impressionism (1885-1920). Phillips Collection (Consortium) Washington, DC $65,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Art Links to Literacy, a museum education project. Targeted to underserved elementary students, and in partnership with Turning the Page, the project will include a family workshop series, professional development for teachers, and student art exhibits. Post-Classical Ensemble, Inc. (aka Post-Classical Ensemble) Washington, DC $17,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the presentation of the classic 1939 documentary film The City, scored by Aaron Copland, with live orchestra and narration. The event will take place at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland-College Park, and will be supplemented with discussion and commentary by artists and scholars. Smart Growth America (Consortium) Washington, DC $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support a publication, citizen's manual, and interactive Web site. In partnership with the City Parks Association, the project will present the outcomes of a community process and design competition on design solutions for vacant urban sites in Philadelphia. Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (Consortium) Washington, DC $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support a Peer-to Peer jazz education tour. In partnership with the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Foundation, activities will include performances and educational programs for jazz students with professional musicians. Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support The Blues and Jazz—Two American Classics. The project of public school and community performances and educational workshops will be presented in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri. Trustees of the Corcoran Gallery of Art Washington, DC $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the re-installation of the museum's collection of American paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, with accompanying education programs. The museum will designate a number of galleries as a permanent space for exhibiting its world-renowned American art collection. Vestry of St. John's Church (aka St. John's Church Lafayette Square) Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support restoration of 19th-century leaded stained glass windows. Restoration treatment will be undertaken by the architectural glass firm Willet Hauser, based on a condition report that prioritizes the windows in most urgent need of repair. Washington Chorus, Inc. Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support education and outreach programs. The chorus will reach out to new audiences and communities through five specific programs reaching youth and underserved populations of the greater Washington, DC area. Washington Men's Camerata, Inc. Washington, DC $7,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the National Library of Men's Choral Music and a second-volume CD recording of choral repertoire for male voices. The project will advance the multi-year development of an operational lending library and searchable database to safeguard collections of rare manuscripts and make available this repertoire for study and performance. Washington National Opera Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support costs associated with the national radio broadcasts of performances by the Washington National Opera. In partnership with National Public Radio, a series of operas will be recorded, produced, and aired on World of Opera.
