The archive will include more than 1,000 visual images, biographical information, video footage, DVDs, newspaper articles, and critical writing. New plays by participating writers will be developed through staged readings and workshop productions. Bay Area Video Coalition, Inc. The Architect and the Painter: The Creative Lives of Charles and Ray Eames will be a feature-length public television biography of the husband-and-wife team who are widely regarded as among the most influential American industrial designers of the 20th century. Center for Asian American Media San Francisco, CA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support completion and distribution costs for a documentary film by Arthur Dong on the history of the Chinese in American feature films. The 90-minute film will be a multi-layered look at American cinematic history from the early 1900s to the present day through the lens of the Chinese American experience. Mariachi los Camperos, led by NEA National Heritage Fellow Natividad Cano, will teach sequential, advanced-level mariachi classes held weekly in evening hours for youth, ages 11 to 18, to prepare them for a culminating concert performance and mariachi conference. The Empress Hotel will examine the transition from homelessness to permanent housing. In collaboration with the Cornerstone Institute and community members, the company will develop and produce a new theater work that highlights the cultural challenges facing the town of Holtville, California. The exhibition will provide historical context for a selection of objects created from the mid-1850s to the present. Creative Growth, Inc. The project to involve artists with disabilities as a vital part of the larger arts community will include a series of studio arts workshops for adults with disabilities, a visiting artists program, an exhibition series, an updated publicity campaign, and a publication. The project precedes the reinstallation of the collection in expanded gallery space in 2009. The collection includes pieces of issei (first-generation Japanese American immigrant) laborer clothing and accessories used on plantations in Hawaii from 1910 to 1940. Jazz Tap Ensemble Inc. Grab a Hunk of Lightning will be a feature-length film portrait of the 20th-century photographer known primarily for her images of human migration and dislocation, including the iconic photograph Migrant Mother.
