SOUTH CAROLINA Carolina Art Association (aka Gibbes Art Museum) Charleston, SC $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the touring exhibition The Plantation in American Art. The Gibbes Art Museum's exhibition will offer a comprehensive look at plantation-related imagery, from the 18th century to the present, by artists of differing backgrounds and experiences. Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties Columbia, SC $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support technical assistance workshops and coordinated marketing programs. Project activity will include consultancies, electronic media placement, and other promotional efforts for the benefit of local artists and more than 50 emerging and established arts organizations. Davis, Carol Ann Charleston, SC $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship. School of the Building Arts Charleston, SC $47,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support Masters of the Building Arts, a festival presenting the skills of master craftspeople. World-renowned artisans with experience in carpentry, masonry, ornamental metalworking, plasterwork, stonework, and timber framing will participate in the festival. Spoleto Festival USA Charleston, SC $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support a series of performances by established and emerging artists. Presentations will include a range of multidisciplinary work, juxtaposing traditional repertoire with the new, and will be accompanied by outreach and audience development activities. Spoleto Festival USA (Consortium) Charleston, SC $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support the creation of a public art work in an historic African American post-Civil War settlement community in Charleston. Artist Frances Whitehead, working with the Charleston Horticultural Society, will create a permanent historic horticultural site at the Borough Houses. University of South Carolina Research Foundation Columbia, SC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support a research project and exhibition to document African American camp meeting grounds in the Carolinas. Camp meetings are outdoor religious revivals that have taken place annually since the 1800s.
