MARYLAND Baltimore Choral Arts Society, Inc. (aka Baltimore Choral Arts Society) Baltimore, MD $7,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support concerts of works for chorus and orchestra. The two programs will include the local premiere of September Sun by David Conte for chorus and orchestra, composed in memory of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, and Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Baltimore Museum of Art, Inc. Baltimore, MD $45,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support a touring exhibition of the work of French Impressionist Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), with accompanying education programs. The exhibition will chronicle the artist's evolution from a member of the Barbizon school to a leader of the emerging modern movement. Black Leadership Council for Excellence Bryans Road, MD $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the Celebrations series of festivals and concerts in Southern Maryland. Major components of the event will be the Festival de las Americas, Asian Pacific Island Festival, Juneteenth Festival of African American Caribbean and African Cultures, and the Doo-Wop and Eurofest concerts. Center Stage Associates, Inc. Endowment Fund (aka CENTERSTAGE) Baltimore, MD $45,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a revival production of Trouble in Mind by Obie Award-winning playwright Alice Childress. First produced in 1955, the play brings to light the racial stereotypes and politics faced by African American artists in the theater field. Imagination Stage, Inc. Bethesda, MD $18,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the development of a new play adapted from a literary work for children. Artistic director Janet Stanford will direct the adaptation of playwright and author Sam Swope's children's book The Araboolies of Liberty Street, with choreography by Robert Dion and music by Gilieh Lee. National Council for the Traditional Arts Silver Spring, MD $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support a series of urban and rural festivals, a series of outdoor concerts in an underserved region of Appalachia, and programming in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the NEA National Heritage Fellowships. The project will honor folk, tribal, and ethnic communities across the nation by developing audiences and providing national exposure for folk artists. Satterfield, Jane M. Baltimore, MD $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship. Society of Kunqu Arts, Inc. Silver Spring, MD $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support and preserve the performing art of Kunqu, the oldest form of Chinese opera. The project will present a series of lecture-demonstrations, workshops, and a full-scale performance. University of Maryland at College Park (on behalf of Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center) College Park, MD $45,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support Cultural Fault Lines, a series of residencies exploring the tensions between cultural traditions and contemporary expressions. Activities of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center will engage audiences, students, and the community in performances, master classes, discussions, symposia, and workshops.
