MASSACHUSETTS American Repertory Theatre Cambridge, MA $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the production of a reinterpretation of Sophocles's Elektra. Artistic director Robert Woodruff and award-winning composer Evan Ziporyn will collaborate to create a new music theater piece to be performed by trained opera singers and musically gifted actors. Amherst College (on behalf of Folger Shakespeare Library) Amherst, MA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the world premiere production of a new adaptation of The Tempest, created by award-winning director Aaron Posner. Composer James Sugg will create original music and design sound to evoke the island world of the play. Barber, David C. Somerville, MA $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship. Boston Ballet, Inc. Boston, MA $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the staging of Polyphonia by choreographer Christopher Wheeldon. The work will premiere at The Wang Theatre. The score, assembled from piano works by Gyorgy Ligeti, will be performed live by one of Boston Ballet's staff soloists.
Boston Critic Inc. (aka Boston Review) Cambridge, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support payment to international novelists for their essays examining the role of fiction in making sense of global and cultural conflicts. Proposed authors include Isabel Allende, George Pelecanos, Israeli writer David Grossman, Lebanese novelist Elias Khoury, and South African writer Zakes Mda. Boston Early Music Festival, Inc. Cambridge, MA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support the North American premiere of Psyché by Jean-Baptiste Lully. The fully staged performances will include early music performers, choristers, and dancers, and will serve as the centerpiece of the 14th biennial festival. Boston Symphony Orchestra, Inc. (aka BSO) (on behalf of Tanglewood Music Center) Boston, MA $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the Festival of Contemporary Music at the Tanglewood Music Center. The week-long concert series, directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison, will feature performances of new music performed by pre-professional musicians and guest artists. Boston University (on behalf of AGNI Magazine) Boston, MA $12,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the publication and promotion of issues of AGNI. The magazine will hire a publicist and place newly designed advertisements in national magazines. Community Economic Development Center of SE Massachusetts New Bedford, MA $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the 2007 Working Waterfront Festival. The event will celebrate the occupational culture and artistic traditions of New England's commercial fishing community. Deer Cloud, Susan (Clements, Susan) Amherst, MA $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship. Double Edge Theatre Productions, Inc. Ashfield, MA $8,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a premiere and national tour of company repertory works. Under the Sign of the Crocodile, a new work based on the life of Bruno Schulz, and the award-winning the UnPOSSESSED, based on Cervantes' Adventures of Don Quixote will also include community outreach activities. Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Inc. Provincetown, MA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the Residency Fellowship Program for emerging artists. Visual artists and writers will receive housing, studios, and a monthly stipend during their residencies. Handel & Haydn Society Boston, MA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support period-instrument performances of choral music by Franz Joseph Haydn and related educational activities. In his first season as artistic director, Sir Roger Norrington will conduct two performances of Haydn's last mass, Harmoniemesse (Harmony Mass). Henry Lee Willis Community Center (aka Willis Center) Worcester, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the African American Festival Series. Activities will include exhibitions, humanities programs, and performances. Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Inc. Becket, MA $70,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support residencies and performances of dance companies during Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival's 75th anniversary. The project will include a Creative Development Residency, presentation of national and international dance companies, and audience engagement programs and educational programs. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (aka MIT) (on behalf of Center for Advanced Visual Studies) Cambridge, MA $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support a multi-tiered, interdisciplinary residency program. Artists participating in the residencies at MIT's Center for Advanced Visual Studies will receive a stipend, travel costs, use of the facilities, and housing. Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art Foundation, Inc. (aka MASS MoCA) North Adams, MA $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support a series of performances, exhibitions, residencies, and media screenings. Participating artists will include the British artist collective Stan's Café, choreographer David Neumann, and Dutch visual artist Dre Wapenaar. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Boston, MA $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the presentation of the exhibition Symbols of Power: Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style, 1800-15, with accompanying education programs. The exhibition is organized with the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Paris, and the American Federation of Arts, New York City. National Center for Jewish Film, Inc. Waltham, MA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the preservation of the film Bar Mitzvah (1935), the only surviving film featuring American Yiddish Theater pioneer Boris Thomashefsky. Once preserved, the film will be presented worldwide at film festivals, libraries, and universities.
North Shore Community Arts Foundation, Inc. (aka North Shore Music Theatre) Beverly, MA $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn will create new songs for the 1982 musical with book by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay, lyrics by Johnny Mercer, and music by Gene de Paul. Ploughshares, Inc. Boston, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the publication and national distribution of issues of Ploughshares. The winter 2007-08 and spring 2008 issues will feature new work by as many as 70 poets and 12 fiction writers. Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library, Inc. (aka National Heritage Museum) (Consortium) Lexington, MA $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the exhibition Keepers of Tradition: Folk Arts in Massachusetts, and an accompanying catalogue. In collaboration with the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the exhibition will highlight folk craft, music making, dance, and annual celebrations rooted in shared ethnicity, religion, occupation, or regional identity. Shinder, Jason Provincetown, MA $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship. Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute Williamstown, MA $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the exhibition The Unknown Monet: Pastels and Drawings, with accompanying education programs. The exhibition is being co-organized with the Royal Academy of Arts, London. University of Massachusetts at Amherst (on behalf of Jubilat) Amherst, MA $5,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the publication and promotion of issues of Jubilat. Each issue will feature contemporary poetry, translations, reprints, found pieces, lyric prose, and author interviews. World Music, Inc. (aka World Music/CRASHarts) Cambridge, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the presentation of contemporary dance companies. Residency activities will include dance and spoken-word/poetry workshops, master classes, discussions, and a Flamenco photo exhibit and film series. Yard, Inc. Chilmark, MA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the Bessie Schnberg Choreographers and Dancers Residency and a residency for dance companies. The residencies provide a supportive environment for the creation and premiere of a new work. Young at Heart Chorus, Incorporated (aka Young at Heart Chorus) Northampton, MA $28,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the development, residencies, and production of a new musical work with accompanying educational and outreach activities. The Mighty Methuselahs are Alive and Well explores the resilience of elders, and will be performed by an ensemble of senior artists.
