ILLINOIS About Face Theatre Collective Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a revival of Execution of Justice by Emily Mann, to be directed by Gary Griffin. Artistic director Eric Rosen will serve as dramaturg and collaborate with the playwright and director to reinterpret the work for contemporary audiences. Art Institute of Chicago (on behalf of Video Data Bank) Chicago, IL $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the transfer of works in the Video Data Bank's videotape collection from analog to digital Betacam format. The transfer will facilitate distribution on DVD and allow the titles to be viewed through streaming video on the Internet. Art Institute of Chicago (on behalf of Gene Siskel Film Center) Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support Showcasing the New Independents at the Gene Siskel Film Center. The curated film series will present premieres of contemporary American independent and foreign films to an estimated audience of 25,000. Art Institute of Chicago Chicago, IL $60,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the touring exhibition Jasper Johns: Gray, with accompanying catalogue and education programs. The exhibition will explore gray as a color and motif in Johns's (b. 1930) work from 1955 to the present. Bradley, John M. Chicago Chamber Musicians (Consortium) Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the First Monday Concert Series. Presented monthly at the Chicago Cultural Center and broadcast live on the WFMT-FM radio station, the free noontime concert series is a partnership with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Chicago Chamber Musicians Chicago, IL $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the Composers Perspectives Series. Plans include three concerts of works composed since 1990 by emerging composers including Mason Bates, Derek Bermel, and Daniel Felsenfeld, and related educational activities. Chicago Filmmakers Chicago, IL $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the Independent Film and Video Exhibition Series and the presentation of the 19th Onion City Film Festival. The Independent Film and Video Exhibition Series will present more than 60 documentary and experimental films and videos. The Onion City Film Festival will celebrate excellence in experimental work. Chicago Human Rhythm Project Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the Tap 2007 dance festival. The project will include educational, performance, and outreach activities. The festival will take place around four main events, culminating in a weekend of performances, lecture-demonstrations, and classes.
Chicago Humanities Festival Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the 2007 Chicago Humanities Festival. Approximately 350 performers, writers, musicians, and visual artists will create work, perform, and participate in symposia centered on the issue of global warming.
Chicago International Film Festival - Cinema Chicago Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the 43rd Chicago International Film Festival. More than 60,000 people will see 130 films from around the world. The festival also will provide screening opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing people, senior citizens, and high school students. Chicago Jazz Orchestra Association (aka Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO)) Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support The Valdés Family: Three Generations of Cuban Jazz. Chuchito Valdés and his Afro-Cuban Ensemble will perform original arrangements of compositions by his works and those of his grandfather (Bebo) and his father (Chucho). Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chicago, IL $75,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support Silk Road Chicago. The citywide celebration of the ancient and contemporary arts and culture of the regions of the historic Silk Road of China will involve multiple community partners and include performances, educational activities, and a residency with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. Chicago Symphony Orchestra (on behalf of Civic Orchestra of Chicago) Chicago, IL $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support stipends and professional training for pre-professional musicians of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Performances and audition coaching will take place under the direction of resident and guest conductors. Columbia College Chicago (on behalf of The Dance Center) Chicago, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support contemporary dance company residencies at The Dance Center. The project includes community engagement and public education programs. Curdy, Averill Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship. Dalkey Archive Press Normal, IL $65,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the publication and promotion of original and reprinted works of fiction in translation. The press will publish titles from the Czech Republic, Portugal, Argentina, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, France, Finland, Uruguay, Romania, and Belgium. Elgin Symphony Orchestra Association Elgin, IL $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support Aaron Copland: American Icon. The month-long festival will be the final installment of a three-year initiative, Exploring Our American Voices, tracing the development of American themes in music through its presentation of concerts, interdisciplinary community events, and education programs. Experimental Sound Studio Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the Artists Residency Program and the Outer Ear Festival of Sound. The project will provide local sound artists with residencies to create and present new sonic art works. Facets Multi-Media, Inc. Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Chicago, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support programs for emerging choreographers to create new work. These programs include the Inside/Out Choreographic Workshops, the National Choreographic Competition, and collaborations between choreographers and Hubbard Street 2 dance company. Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation Chicago, IL $13,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support the creation of an educational publication on peer coaching circles and mentoring processes. The publication will be used by local arts agencies and statewide and regional service organizations to implement similar programming. Joffrey Ballet Chicago, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the presentation of ballets as part of the company's 50th anniversary celebration in a program titled Destiny's Dances. The ballets will include Leonide Massine's Les Présages, Kurt Jooss' The Green Table, and George Balanchine's Apollo. Korean American Resource and Cultural Center (Consortium) Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the JishinBalpgi Lunar New Year Festival and a National Skill Sharing Conference. In collaboration with Korean Resource Center, Inc., the events will preserve and raise the visibility of Korean cultural arts at local, regional, and national levels. Luna Negra Danza Teatro (aka Luna Negro Dance Theater) Chicago, IL $5,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the creation and presentation of Guajira, by choreographer Pedro Ruiz. The work will premiere at the Athenaeum Theater in Chicago and then become part of the company's touring repertory. The work pays tribute to Ruiz's native Cuba and is based on the Guajiro, the people who cultivate the land. Lyric Opera Center for American Artists Chicago, IL $22,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support faculty costs for a comprehensive singer training and professional development program. Faculty will provide a multidisciplinary program of study to prepare young artists for professional operatic careers. Lyric Opera of Chicago Chicago, IL $100,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support a production of Doctor Atomic by composer John Adams, with the libretto by Adams and Peter Sellars. The opera examines the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, and explores the moral dilemmas and global ramifications of the nuclear bomb. Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum (aka MFACM) Chicago, IL $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support a Day of the Dead exhibition, with accompanying catalogue and education programs. The museum's annual Dia de los Muertos exhibition is the largest in the United States and the museum's most popular event. Muntu Dance Theatre Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the creation and presentation of a new work by Brazilian choreographer Rosangela Silvestre, as well as education and outreach activities. The work will premiere as part of the inaugural season of the new Muntu Performing Arts Center. Neo-Futurists Chicago, IL $8,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the creation, development, and production of a play. Poker at the White House, by playwright and ensemble member Sean Benjamin, will be directed by Sean Daniels. Old Town School of Folk Music, Inc. Chicago, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the Global Roots Concert Series. The project will showcase performances by artists who represent a broad array of music and dance traditions, from Hawaiian slack key guitarists, to Celtic fiddlers, to American blues gospel. Ragdale Foundation Lake Forest, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support residencies for artists from Chicago's underserved communities. Artists working in the visual arts, performing arts, and literature will receive lodging, studios, meals, and stipends. Redmoon Theater Chicago, IL $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the development and production of a play. Once Upon A Time by Joe Meno will be directed by associate artistic director Frank Maugeri. River North Chicago Dance Company Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the creation and presentation of a work choreographed by artistic director Frank Chaves, with an original score composed by Evan Solot. Underground Movements: a Celebration of Intergenerational Learning will be created in community-based improvisational workshops and will tour across the United States with each community contributing a section of movement to the work, which will be performed in its home theater. Steppenwolf Theatre Company Chicago, IL $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the world premiere production of August: Osage County, a new play by Tracy Letts. Originally commissioned by the theater and created specifically for its ensemble, the piece will be directed by Anna Shapiro. Teatro Vista...Theater with a View (aka Teatro Vista) Chicago, IL $8,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support Tapas a la Teatro Vista, a free reading series of new scripts by Latino writers. The annual series pairs emerging playwrights with directors and actors for public readings offered in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. TimeLine Theatre Company Chicago, IL $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the development and production of a new play. Dream City (working title) by Brett Neview will be developed in collaboration with artistic director P. J. Powers. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (on behalf of Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival) Champaign, IL $7,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the ninth Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival. Each year, Roger Ebert selects 12 films that have not received broad attention from audiences, critics or distributors. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (on behalf of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts) Champaign, IL $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the second Wall to Wall Guitar Festival. Performances by local, national, and international guitarists will be complemented by presentations involving video, multimedia, literature, and visual arts exhibitions related to the guitar.
