DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA African Continuum Theatre Coalition, Inc. Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the world premiere production of The Oracle, a new play by Ed Shockley. The play was inspired by George Bernard Shaw's 1933 short story The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God. ASLA Library and Education Advocacy Fund, Inc. (aka ASLA Fund) Washington, DC $22,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support a "green roof" exhibit, student workbook, and discovery program. The project will raise awareness and promote the "green roof," a rooftop garden or landscape, as a tool for providing needed green space in urban communities. Chorus America (Consortium) Washington, DC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support professional development for choral conductors of youth choruses. The San Francisco Girls Chorus will partner with Chorus America to host conducting workshops in San Francisco. Chorus America Washington, DC $60,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support services and technical assistance to the choral field. Activities will include an annual conference, publications, research, and leadership development forums for conductors, board members, and managers. D.C. Wheel Productions, Inc. (aka Dance Place) Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the presentation of performances and residencies by dancers at Dance Place. Artists will represent a wide spectrum of dance styles including African, modern, hip-hop, and tap dance. Dance/USA Washington, DC $100,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support professional development services, technology improvements, and staff expansion during Dance/USA's 25th anniversary. Professional development services will include Council meetings; Biennial Roundtables; Leadership for Artistic Directors, an Executive Leaders Forum; and a Dance Presenters Leadership Forum. District of Columbia Jewish Community Center Inc. (on behalf of Theater J) Washington, DC $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the development and production of a play at Theater J. Either Or by Thomas Keneally will be directed by Daniel De Raev. John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (aka The Kennedy Center) Washington, DC $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the Jazz In Our Time Festival. The eight-day festival will showcase the jazz art form through performance, film, photography, jam sessions, and panel discussions. As many as 23 NEA Jazz Masters, including Paquito D'Rivera and Billy Taylor, will peform alongside emerging jazz artists. National Museum of Women in the Arts, Inc. Washington, DC $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the exhibition Italian Renaissance and Baroque Women Artists: Myth and History, with accompanying education programs. While paintings, sculptures, and prints by the artists to be included are scattered throughout Italian and other European museums, they have never been seen together. National Symphony Orchestra Association (aka National Symphony Orchestra) Washington, DC $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support an audience engagement initiative designed to foster understanding of and participation in the performing arts by generations of orchestral audiences. The orchestra will perform concerts designed for sequential age groups from toddlers to young adults and families. Phillips Collection Washington, DC $60,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the touring exhibition Impressionists by the Sea, with accompanying education programs. The exhibition will examine the social history reflected in the sea coast in mid to late 19th-century France. Provisions Learning Project (aka Provisions Library) Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support Out on Site, a series of temporary public art installations in the Washington region. Artists commissioned to make work for the project are Yoko Ono, Brad McCallum, Jacqueline Tarry, and Matt Mullican. Shakespeare Theatre Washington, DC $55,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the production of a Shakespeare play. Titus Andronicus will be directed by Gale Edwards and will be part of the city-wide festival Shakespeare in Washington. Smith, John Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship. Studio Theatre, Inc. Washington, DC $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard. The production will represent the theater's contribution to the Kennedy Center's Shakespeare in Washington festival in 2007. Vocal Arts Society (aka VAS) Washington, DC $12,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the presentation of solo vocal recitalists, including mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and tenor Quinn Kelsey. Performances will be held in the Terrace Theater at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and other venues in Washington, DC. Washington Drama Society, Inc. (aka Arena Stage) Washington, DC $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the production of a new musical adapted from a literary work with accompanying educational and outreach activities. Arena Stage artistic director Molly Smith will direct The Women of Brewster Place adapted from Gloria Naylor's novel of the same name by playwright and composer Tim Acito. Washington National Opera Washington, DC $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support a new production of Verdi's Macbeth. The production will be part of a citywide Shakespeare in Washington festival. Washington Performing Arts Society (aka WPAS) Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support dance presentations and residency activities. Performances will take place at the Tivoli Theatre, Atlas Performing Arts Center, and Dance Place in Washington, DC. Washington Performing Arts Society (Consortium) Washington, DC $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support ArteAmericA. In partnership with GALA Hispanic Theatre, the project will include performances and residencies celebrating Latino cultures throughout the Americas. Washington, DC International Film Festival (aka Filmfest DC) Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the 21st annual Filmfest DC. The event includes free films for children, senior citizens, and underserved communities. Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company Washington, DC $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the world premiere of Dead Man's Cell Phone, a new play by Sarah Ruhl. Rebecca Taichman will direct, and the production will feature actress Polly Noonan and members of Woolly's resident acting company. Young Playwrights' Theater, Inc. Washington, DC $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the Youth or Dare Tour, a professional tour of plays written by young playwrights from middle and high schools. The plays will receive dramaturgical support and the playwrights will actively participate in the rehearsal process to refine their plays.
