Black History Museum and Cultural Center, Inc. (consortium)

To support an open and invited national design competition for an urban landscape that honors those
African Americans whose lives were changed by the institution of American slavery. The Black
History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, the Public Art Commission of the City of Richmond,
the Arts Council of Richmond, and the Hand Workshop Art Center are joint organizers of the
competition.
Jurors may include: Elizabeth Meyer (UVA), Ken Smith (Harvard), Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, and
Karen Van Lengen (UVA). The open competition will be supplemented by invited proposals from: Walter
Hood, Martin Puryear, Stanley Saitowitz Office, Weiss/Manfredi Architects and William Williams.

To support an invited national design competition for the renovation and expansion of an historic
high school for the arts in the downtown Dallas Arts District. The two-phase competition will
include a Request for Qualifications, with three to five firms selected to submit detailed
competition entries.
The competition advisor will be Hal Box, AIA. The 11-member jury will include architects Ron Skaggs
(AIA chairman; HKS Architects), George Miller (Pei Cobb Freed & Partners), and Julie Eizenberg
(Koning Eizenberg Architects).

To support an open and invited two-stage national design competition for a new Chicago public school
that will use universal design principles to create a building that will allow the full integration
of disabled and non-disabled students.
The competition advisor will be Design Competition Services. Potential jury members include: Ralph
Johnson (Perkins & Will Architects), Bridget Shim (Shim-Sutcliffe Architects), David Lee (Stull &
Lee), and Bill Ayers (UIC). Invited firms include: Koning Eizenberg Architects, Ross Barney &
Jankowski Architects, Smith-Miller Hawkinson Architects and Mac Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, Inc.

To support an open and invited national design competition for an affordable housing prototype as a
model for improved public housing. On selection of a winning design, the CHA will issue a Request
for Qualifications to select a developer to construct at least one city block using the design.
The competition advisor will be Ralph Lerner (Princeton University). Jurors will include: Stanley
Tigerman (Archeworks), Howard Decker (DLK Architecture), Reed Kroloff (Architecture Magazine), Randy
Jefferson (FOGA), and Lee Bey (Sun Times). Pre-selected finalists are: Shim-Sutcliffe Architects,
Garofalo Architects, Mockbee-Coker Architects, and Stanley Saitowitz Office, with William Bruder
Architects as an alternate.

and educational village. The village will act as a demonstration project for the integration of
affordable housing and existing educational programs.
The competition advisor will be Dan Stastny. The jury will include a nationally recognized
architect and landscape architect. Invited competitors will include: Adele Santos, Hodgetts & Fung
Architects, RoTo Architects, Morphosis, Rob Wellington Quigley, MACK Architects, Pfau Architecture,
and Studio E, among others.

To support an invited international design competition to develop a conceptual master plan for the
reuse of the landfill at Fresh Kills. The competition will include a Request for Qualifications,
with five teams selected to develop conceptual plans, and the winner negotiating a contract for
design services.
Project leaders will include: Lee Weintraub (CUNY), Mierle Ukeles, Brendan Sexton (MAS), and
numerous highly placed municipal officials. The 11-member jury will include top-level experts in
landscape, engineering, design, and natural sciences, as well as community members and city agency
representatives.

To support an invited national design competition for the Pittsburgh Children's Center, including
design of an expansion to the existing Children's Museum, incorporation of adjacent buildings and
public spaces and the redesign of connecting streetscapes.
The seven-member jury will include Paola Antonelli (MoMA) and Mabel Wilson. Of ten firms considered
for participation, the following six have been selected for the competition:
Damianos+Anthony/Rothschild Architects, Koning Eizenberg Architects, Reiser+Umemoto Architects; Mac
Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, Inc.; Smith-Miller Hawkinson Architects and Stamberg Aferiat
Architects.

Park, an outdoor park on the downtown waterfront. The project will include development of physical
and thematic connections between new public spaces and adjacent rights-of-way.

To support an open national design competition for a major transportation infrastructure project.
The selected designer(s) will work with a team developing a master plan for the Rio Nuevo District
and play a leading role in the design of pedestrian and transit linkages throughout the District.
The competition advisor will be Michael Pittas. The jury will include Lajos Heder (Cambridge, MA),
as well as representation from local architecture and engineering professionals.
