Application Review

Review Criteria

The following criteria are considered during the review of applications:

The artistic excellence of the project, which includes the:

• Creative abilities of the production team, as reflected in the work samples that accompany the application.
• Significance of the subject of the program.
• Appropriateness of the proposed approach to the subject.
• Quality of the artists or the works of art that are to be involved, as appropriate.

The artistic merit of the project, which includes the:

• Potential of the program to reach a significant national audience.
• Potential of the project to encourage appreciation of the arts by diverse audiences.
• Potential of ancillary activities to enhance the program's reach and effectiveness.
• Relationship of the project to what has been done on the same subject in the past.
• Archival significance of the project.
• Likelihood that the project will achieve the identified outcome(s) and the feasibility of the proposed performance measurements.
• Ability to carry out the project including the appropriateness of the budget, the applicant's ability to raise non-Arts Endowment funds to complete the project, and the resources involved.

Application Review and Announcement Date

All applications are reviewed by an advisory panel. Panel recommendations are forwarded to the National Council on the Arts, which then makes recommendations to the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. The Chairman reviews the Council’s recommendations and makes the final decision on all grant awards. Applicants will be notified of award or rejection in April 2009.
